Our Background

Office of the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya

Our Background

Prior to the Promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya 2010, the Office of the Deputy President was known as the Office of the Vice President. The Office of the Vice President was established in the year 1963 after Kenya gained independence up to  2013.

The Constitution of Kenya 2010 (CoK, 2010) under Article 147 establishes the Office of the Deputy President as the Principal Assistant of the President, who deputises the Head of State in the execution of his functions. The Deputy President also performs functions conferred by the Constitution and any other function as the President may assign through delegation and/or Executive Orders issued from time to time.

The Office of the Deputy President derives its mandate and functions from the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 (CoK 2010), the Executive Order No. 2 of 2023 on organization of Government and other related subordinate laws. The mandate and functions are critical in coordination, execution and oversight of Government Development Agenda for socio-economic transformation.
