H.E Prof. Kithure Kindiki, E.G.H. - The Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya
H.E Prof. Kithure Kindiki E.G.H currently serves as the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya, a role he assumed on 1 November 2024 following a significant moment in the country’s constitutional history. His elevation to this high office followed the impeachment of his predecessor by Parliament and his subsequent nomination by President William Ruto. His appointment—unanimously confirmed after the lifting of judicial injunctions—was a constitutional affirmation of executive stability and continuity.
Days later, on 11 November 2024, he was formally named Deputy Party Leader of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) within the Kenya Kwanza coalition, underscoring the deep political trust and strategic importance of his leadership.
Before his appointment to the Deputy Presidency, Professor Kindiki held the critical portfolio of Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration from September 2022, a position in which he led far-reaching reforms in national security, public administration, and internal governance. He was instrumental in the modernisation of Kenya’s national ID and passport systems, strengthened the police through the Police Equipment Modernisation Programme, and introduced reforms aligned with the recommendations of the Maraga Taskforce on police welfare and accountability.
He was also at the forefront of recognising stateless and marginalised communities, ensuring their integration into the national administrative framework. Under his stewardship, correctional facilities witnessed transformative change, including the enrolment of over 13,000 inmates into formal education, signifying his inclusive and reform-oriented leadership approach.
Professor Kindiki's entry into national leadership was preceded by an accomplished legislative career. Elected as Senator for Tharaka-Nithi County in 2013 under the Jubilee coalition, he was appointed the inaugural Majority Leader in the Senate, a role in which he coordinated government business and legislative agendas from 2013 to 2017.
Re-elected in 2017, he went on to serve as Deputy Speaker of the Senate, where his leadership was marked by procedural rigour, fairness, and a commitment to amplifying the voices of youth, women, minorities, and persons with disabilities across Kenya’s 47 counties. Throughout his time in Parliament, Kindiki was widely respected for his legal acumen, measured leadership, and principled governance.
His career in public service and governance is deeply rooted in a distinguished academic and legal background. A Professor of International Law, Kindiki has contributed significantly to legal scholarship and constitutional development both in Kenya and abroad.
His academic journey began at Moi University, where he earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 1998. He then pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, earning a Master’s degree in International Human Rights Law and Democracy (2000), followed by a PhD in International Law (2002). He also obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Studies from the Kenya School of Law in 2001, qualifying as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
Professor Kindiki commenced his academic career in 1999 as an Assistant Lecturer at Moi University. In 2004, he joined the University of Nairobi, where his rise saw him appointed Head of the Department of Public Law at the age of 33 and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Law by age 35. He later attained the rank of Associate Professor of International Law.
With over 30 peer-reviewed publications, numerous book chapters, and scholarly essays, his academic influence spans continents. He has been a visiting scholar at the University of São Paulo in Brazil and the Central European University in Hungary, and has offered expert consultancy to international bodies including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the African Union (AU), and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
Professor Kindiki’s legal practice has been equally distinguished. As an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and former defence counsel at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, he has brought international legal recognition to Kenya’s legal fraternity. In 2008, he briefly served as Secretary to the National Cohesion Commission during President Mwai Kibaki’s administration, where he contributed to early reconciliation efforts in post-election Kenya.
Born on 17 July 1972 in Tharaka-Nithi, then part of Meru District, Professor Kindiki’s journey is a testament to perseverance, intellect, and visionary service. Raised in Irunduni village, he emerged from modest beginnings in a family that deeply valued education. He attended Lenana School and Tharaka Boys High School, excelling academically before launching into a career that would eventually straddle academia, legal practice, legislative leadership, and executive governance.
He is married to Dr Joyce Gatiiria Njagi, a senior lecturer in environmental chemistry at the University of Nairobi.
In recognition of his exemplary service to the nation, Professor Kindiki has been conferred with the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (EGH), one of the country’s highest civilian honours.
Today, Professor Kindiki embodies a rare synthesis of scholarship and statesmanship. His leadership is anchored in constitutionalism, institutional reform, and a belief in governance driven by integrity and inclusion. Whether reforming the security sector, modernising civil registration systems, or upholding the rule of law, he brings a depth of intellect and a clarity of purpose that continues to shape the national conversation.
In both Kenya and across East Africa, he is increasingly recognised as a figure who bridges academic excellence with executive capacity—a leader whose contributions to law, governance, and public policy will leave an enduring legacy in the region’s democratic development.
