Ruto on special economic zones

Deputy President William Ruto has said that the Government will establish Special Economic Zones (SEZ) in Mombasa to promote manufacturing and value addition.

He said that the Mombasa SEZ will have an agro-industrial zone that will incorporate activities such as blending and packaging to give value to agricultural products for export.

Mr Ruto made the remarks at his office when he met the Slovak ambassador to Kenya- Michal Mlynar Solvak.

‘’We are working on Special Economic Zones in Mombasa to spur manufacturing with a special focus on value addition,” he said.

Mr. Ruto said the Government will partner with institutions with skills in value addition.

He regretted that 85 percent of the country’s leather products go to waste because of poor management.

“We would like to turn the leather into a quality product that we can sell,” he said.

Mr. Ruto praised the cordial relations between Kenya and Slovak saying further co-operation will be enhanced for the benefit of citizens of the two countries.


He called on the Slovak government to invest in the development of Tertiary Vocational Educational Institutions (TVET) that will equip Kenyan youth with relevant skills and competencies to drive the economy.

The Deputy President noted that development cooperation will continue to benefit the people of Kenya citing the 60 km long Isebania –Kiamakebe-Kehancha-Gwitembe road that will be tarmacked with the assistance of the Government of Slovakia.
